Unlocking Fluency

From the school-based team that brought you Unlocking Letters and Sounds (the DfE-validated SSP programme), Unlocking Fluency is a brand-new fluency scheme – based on guidance from the Reading Framework, the EEF and Dr Tim Rasinski.

It can follow on from any phonics programme, providing the next step in students’ reading journey. That is, learning fluency (the ability to read accurately, at an appropriate pace and with appropriate expression) as an explicit skill, to in turn free up cognitive load and allow them to focus on understanding the text (comprehension) – not reading the words.

Fully resourced to reduce teacher workload, the Unlocking Fluency lessons always include a text (fiction, non-fiction or poetry) and follow a six-part structure:

• Model read – teacher models fluent reading
• Vocabulary – key words introduced and explained 
• Practice read – pupils practise fluency (e.g. echo/choral reading) 
• Partner practice – repeated paired reading to build fluency 
• Perform – pupils read aloud to an audience 
• Understanding the text – comprehension activities
