A pre-prepared guided reading lesson plan for every Reading Stars Phonics title, Phases 1 to 5.
Designed to reduce teacher workload, these plans make it simple to deliver structured literacy lessons around our fully decodable books for KS1, unlocking their potential to become part of the teaching of comprehension, inference, punctuation, etc.
The lesson plans are structured as follows:
* Book Overview
* Before Reading (includes “Introducing the book” then, where relevant, “How books work”, “Phonics recap”, “Blending focus”, “Language focus”, “Vocabulary”)
* During Reading (includes “Reading together” at Phase 1, “Independent reading” and “Reading with fluency” at Phases 2 to 5)
* After Reading (includes “Talking about the book” at Phase 1, “Revisit the text”, “Comprehension”, “Language, grammar and punctuation” and “Discussion” at Phases 2 to 5)
NOTE FOR SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND:
If your chosen SSP programme supplies its own pre-prepared guided reading lesson plans (like, say, Unlocking Letters and Sounds does), we strongly encourage you to use those plans, to ensure you’re delivering the SSP programme with fidelity.
If your chosen SSP programme does not supply its own pre-prepared guided reading lesson plans, but does provide a format for/guidance around guided reading, we strongly encourage you to follow that format/guidance, to ensure you’re delivering the SSP programme with fidelity. Our pre-prepared plans should still be a useful resource – if you can plug our content into their format, at least you don’t have to come up with your own comprehension questions from scratch!
"My son Milo and a few of his classmates are on Phase 3 and are enjoying talking about which books they've read and which they want to pick next. It's lovely to hear."
Katie Black, Parent
"We purchased a full set of your amazing reading books this year and we have been absolutely delighted with the enjoyment our children have taken from reading them and the incredible progress they have made."
Vicky Gambier, Semley CE Primary School
"They are great. Opportunities to independently access the wider curriculum plus excellent for group work and they have a sense of humour running through them! Many phonics schemes are just decoding and are therefore devoid of interest or sense, but the books in this scheme have both."
Abi Burton, Teacher
"I love the ease of matching a child’s phonics learning to a suitable book. It gives them the confidence to read what they know as well as developing their phonic goals. There is a huge variety of books in each set before they move on."
Helen Chester, Teacher
"We researched different schemes aiming to find one to cater to all our needs – providing a breadth of books for children to embed their learning without moving too quickly, whilst also providing interesting stories to initiate discussion and represent children and their backgrounds. Reading Stars Phonics stood out, with books including vibrant pictures and interesting content reflecting the rich diversity of a child’s world. (One parent commented ‘this book has my brother’s name as one of the characters. I've never come across a book with his name in it.’) We were so impressed by the books that we decided to buy the entire range and amend our phonics teaching, rather than buy the books to complement our scheme. This required a change to the order in which we previously taught the sounds. However, as a result, we now have the best of both worlds, delighting all involved including teachers, children and parents. And our children’s reading achievements continue to impress!"
Cara Ventham, Jack and Jill Family of Schools
"From an English Lead point of view, they closely match our phonics teaching scheme, they are easily categorised in to week by week teaching and they help to support children who need further support. I also like how they support equality and diversity and show children a range of different cultures and disabilities. As a school, we are working for our equality and diversity badge and feel that Reading Stars Phonics really helps to support this. Our school has 99% of children who are white British and we have a very low percentage of FSM, so we feel that through reading Reading Stars Phonics, children are being exposed to the wider world and this also supports their cultural capital. I would recommend these books to all other schools."
Rachel Shields, St. Michael’s on Wyre CE Primary School and Nursery
