Dark Man
Interest Age: 13+
Reading Age: 5 - 8
Orange - Gold band
With its atmospheric illustrations, captivating stories and innovative design to appeal to (and support) poor readers, Dark Man has been acclaimed around the world.
The series follows a shadowy, brooding loner who has been recruited to play a part in a secret struggle between good and evil.
Short and simple, but never patronising, each book is a self-contained story, while also being part of a greater whole – a kind of ‘Dark Man mythology’.
Sets 1 and 2 are lower level reads (starting at just 200 words), while Sets 3 and 4 are slightly higher, offering progression. There are also six plays which are ideal for small reading groups where you are accommodating different abilities i.e. in each play, there are some some easier parts and some harder parts.
NOTE: Rest assured, while these stories look very dark, they only hint at horror – there is actually no ‘tough content’.
This series contains the original editions of the Dark Man titles, which are all quizzed for Accelerated Reader. For our new ‘decodable editions’ (where we’ve made the necessary word changes to make the texts 100% fully decodable at Letters and Sounds Phase 5), head here.

"Three of my students have started with the books this week and are already hooked. For one boy in Year 10, it was the first book he had ever managed to read independently in English that was age-appropriate, so I am delighted with the purchase."
Vicki Rabicano, EAL Coordinator
"The Dark Man series is dark stuff indeed – gritty and full of tension and mystery. Perfectly pitched at reluctant teens and young adults, these short, clever stories also feature memorable artwork and clear layout. Those with a low reading age will want to spend time with the mysterious Dark Man and follow his ongoing adventures. More power to him!"
Ian Rankin, Author
"The Dark Man himself is an intriguing and compelling character. The text is stylish, accessible and never patronising while the illustrations are absorbing and darkly fascinating. It takes a special kind of book to genuinely capture and hold the attention of those who, for whatever reason, are reluctant to read. The stories that make up the Dark man series fit the bill perfectly."
Mark Billingham, Author
"The Dark Man books have been very popular as they are short, there is a small amount of text on each page, yet the illustrations and story combine to convey a powerful, adult plot. Emergent readers gain self esteem from being able to read a whole book and they start to see themselves as readers. One lad said to me ‘The other teacher only made me read a page, I’ve read a whole book to you’."
Penny Pinn, Tutor
"Thank you so much for the free Dark Man resources! They've given me far more ideas to use with my KS3 groups than I had imagined. Towards the end of last term, I started using stories from Dark Man Set 2 and have found them to be quite addictive! And not just me. Students really enjoy the unfussy structure of the stories and combined with my atmospheric rendition for effect, they are able to achieve the maximum benefit. I've even got them to write their own Chapter 5. Thank you once again for a great resource."
J Alleyne, Teacher
"I bought four of your Dark Man books for my son. Andrew is nine and suffers from ADHD and dyslexia. He struggles with reading and I have found it very hard to find books he enjoys. Today I have found those books – yours! He loves them!"
Jo, Parent
"I have used this series with a mixture of lower secondary-aged pupils with varying degrees of literacy difficulties and all thoroughly enjoyed both the stories and the activities from the workbooks. I particularly like the way the reading and workbooks are set out, as it is dramatic and very appealing. The pupils commented on the limited amount of text on each page with dramatic illustrations, which they found encouraging and exciting. I can only recommend you to try these very innovative books for yourself."
Kate Brown, SENCO
"They weren't boring like most school books. The illustrations were brilliant. They were very grown up. The length of the book was good because too much writing puts me off. The story was able to be told in a few words and wonderful illustrations. The book did not insult my intelligence."
Sam, Student
"I work with a 16 year old boy with very complex difficulties. Today we had a go at reading ‘The Dark Fire of Doom’ from the Dark Man series. He read the entire book completely independently and undertood it! This is the first time this has ever happened. He was engaged by the story, saying it was like a horror film and was incredibly proud of himself."
Anna-Marie McMahon, Learning Support Teacher
"I think the illustrations are very good. They remind me of ghost stories. I like the stories. What I like about them is if you want time to go fast it does because they are short stories."
Ben, Student
"Really fits a gap in the market - a high interest age but low reading age book that nobody will be worried about being seen with."
