Lilac - Green band
A structured reading programme to develop the literacy skills of older students who’re still at the early stages of learning to read, having never got to grips with conventional reading schemes.
With motivating those learners to want to read the utmost priority, these 48 fiction and non-fiction titles cover a range of football-related topics and stories. Some were even written by professional players.
The books also have an older, ‘magazine-like’ look and feel – all the while remaining carefully designed to support weaker readers.
In terms of the structuring/levels, the collection leans towards a phonetic Letters and Sounds-based approach.
- Level 1 books have no words, supporting activities around aural discrimination – but also working as a gentle introduction for those older readers who are so resistant to books that ‘reading’ is not yet an option. For these students, the books can simply be used as starting points for discussion.
- Level 2 books cover the main letter-sound links, CVCs and some complex football words.
- Level 3 books continue to cover letter-sound links and build some more complex sounds.
- Level 4 books introduce more consonant blending and more complex football words.
- Level 5 books extend vocabulary to include more irregular letter-sound links.
But, critically, the Goal! books are highly (not fully) decodable, adopting an alternative and nuanced approach to using phonics with (certain) older learners.
More information about this approach can be found here.

"The layout is good, there is not too much on a page and the language has 'street cred'. The illustrations are great and engender some useful speaking and listening exercise. The early picture based books are ideal stimulus for writing and work well as practice for sequencing events. And I like the way, later in the series, the writers introduce some more challenging words. As my pupils are so caught up in the context, these pose no problems. I am looking forward to moving up to the higher levels. A great scheme which is much needed."
Rosie Collisnson, Dyslexia and Associated Learning Difficulties Tutor
"The student showed a marked reluctance until he started reading and then he was off – really working hard at the phonics and discussing the pictures. He even agreed to read a second book at the same sitting!"
Lynne Oliver, SENCO
"We are a special school for boys with Statements of SEN for BESD - and we have a group of very disaffected Year 10 boys. The reading schemes we already had in school were failing to inspire them - the group felt they were too "babyish". We were reluctant to fall back on magazines etc, as the boys obviously needed a graded scheme to make any real progress, so we purchsed your GOAL! series. When I took the first selection of books (some from each level) to the tutor room, the boys literally fell on them. They saw them as relating to "real" life - they were in the position of telling teachers about the footballers i.e. they were now the experts. A non-specialist teacher (as their tutor is) is now able to read with the boys in a non-confrontational way."
Gillian Green, Literacy Co-ordinator
"The Goal! series is an absolute triumph in reaching out to older pupils, usually boys, who have never mastered reading. It is a real challenge to engage these pupils, but these books indulge their interests and match their ability level, however low that might be, shifting their attitude away from 'reading is boring' or 'not for me'."
Margaret Coleman, Head Teacher
“We have started using the Level 2 books with our 10 year old young man (who is almost a non-reader) and he really loves the books. He said he likes the way he can read them himself and they look like the books that the other children are reading (instead of the ‘infant-type’ books that he was having to read before). He absolutely loves anything to do with football and loves talking about all the photographs and illustrations in them, too.”
